When I was a young, poor hard-working secretary, I knew one thing - I'd want to build a house one day but I knew that by the time I could afford it, the land would be expensive. So I decided to buy an acre right then, sit on it, and either build or sell for a profit when the time came. And five years later - I sold it for an amazing profit. I was hooked like a crack addict! I bought and sold three more pieces in the next couple years, but paid 6-10% in commissions, and thought - jeez, I need a license.
Both Doug & I took classes at the Arizona School of Real Estate, and in our very first class, the instructor asked, "who is going to practice in land?" Only a few hands were raised - and we knew we were going into the right field with little competition. We love land - you need vision, imagination and a lot of courage to see what isn't there. We love driving out into unchartered desert with our dogs, a map, a GPS, a strong directional sense internally, a couple gallons of water and a whole day in front of us. We love the land specialists - we all feel like we're in the know before most other people. Land is all about what might happen, what could happen, and by the time it gets to what will happen, we've been there, done that and moved on. It's speculating and daring to dream.
Land is the basis for all real estate - it has it's own rules and requirements. We humbly hope to be specialists/experts and we learn something new every day. We never plan to sell anything else - we plan to always be just The Dirt Dealers.
