Casa Grande is a dynamic, involved community, a modern city with rural heritage and old-fashion values. Its economic base is a mix of retail trade, factory outlet shopping, manufacturing and agriculture. Located midway between Phoenix and Tucson, the city has grown to be the largest community in western Pinal County since its incorporation in 1915.
Founded in 1879, Casa Grande was named for the famous Hohokam Indian ruins twenty miles to the northeast. Casa Grande is strategically located at the intersection of two interstate highways (I-10 and I-8) in an area known as Arizona 's Golden Corridor. Once dependent on agriculture and mining, the community has evolved into a diversified full-service area with manufacturing, retail trade and government and tourist-related employment. The Outlets at Casa Grande, featuring many upscale fashion stores, is located at an exit of I-10. Phase one of The Promenade at Casa Grande opened on November 16, 2007. Built by Westcor and the Pederson Group, it is similar to Desert Ridge Market Place (an outdoor shopping center in Scottsdale, Arizona). The Promenade at Casa Grande is an open-air outdoor mall, built on a 100-acre (0.40 km2) patch of desert, and contains nearly a million square feet. An additional $11 million dollars was spent by the city to fund the reconstruction of the Florence Blvd./I-10 freeway overpass.
Casa Grande's location, mild climate and scenic attractions make it inviting to tourists and winter visitors. The Casa Grande Valley Historical Museum offers many historical displays and facts about the area. The historical railroad station and other buildings can be enjoyed on a walking tour. Named a "Main Street City" in 1992, Casa Grande is revitalizing its unique downtown area. The Casa Grande Art Museum hosts a number of shows each year featuring Arizona artists. The city is also home to the Arizona State Open Chili Championship held in March and Heritage and Tourism Days in January. The annual O'Odham Tash Celebration, a gathering of tribes, traditionally held over President's Day weekend, features Native American arts and crafts, ceremonial dances, rodeos, powwows and parades.
